7 face wash texture shots on a white background.

When it comes to self-care, wash-off face masks are my absolute go-to! They've always been the highlight of my skincare routine, and I religiously use them 2-3 times a week. The beauty of wash-off masks is that they can target so many different skin concerns depending on their ingredients. In this blog, I'm excited to share some of my all-time favorites, breaking down their key ingredients and benefits. Hopefully, you'll discover a new holy-grail mask too!

1. Skinfood Wash-Off Black Sugar Masks – Black Sugar, Strawberry Sugar & Honey Sugar

3 Skinfood masks with texture shots

Key Functions: Exfoliation, moisturizing & skin softening

Key Ingredients: Black sugar, macadamia seed oil, meadowfoam seed oil, shea butter, lanolin

*Strawberry Sugar: BHA, botanical extracts, strawberry seeds, strawberry fruit extract, lactobacillus/hibiscus flower ferment

*Honey Sugar: Honey, propolis extract, lactobacillus/hibiscus flower ferment & saccharomyces ferment

I have grouped these 3 Skinfood masks together because they share the same key ingredients, perform similarly, provide the same results, and I equally adore all of them. Among all the skincare products I have tried, none have been used as long or have been repurchased as many times as the Black Sugar mask! While I have only been using the Strawberry Sugar and Honey Sugar masks for about a year, I've loved the Black Sugar mask for over a decade. All three masks contain black sugar, macadamia seed oil, meadowfoam seed oil, shea butter, and lanolin in their base, but the Strawberry Sugar and Honey Sugar masks have additional unique components. The Strawberry Sugar mask has an incredible realistic strawberry fragrance, along with strawberry extract and seeds for added physical exfoliation. On the other hand, the Honey Sugar mask contains honey, propolis extract, and, as expected, a beautiful honey scent! Each of these masks offers gentle yet effective exfoliation without causing any irritation. The black sugar provides both physical and chemical exfoliation due to its natural glycolic acid content, melting softly when water is added and massaged onto the skin. Nothing else leaves my skin feeling as soft and smooth as Skinfood's Black Sugar masks!

2. coxir Black Rice TXA Pore Purifying Mask

Key Functions: Pore care, brightening & fading hyperpigmentation

Key Ingredients: Black rice, tranexamic acid, charcoal powder, snail mucin

This next mask from coxir is very unique. It starts off as a thick serum texture, and once water is introduced, it lathers up almost like a cleanser and rinses away effortlessly. It is formulated with one of my favorite brightening ingredients tranexamic acid, and its black color comes from the addition of charcoal powder. While this mask does leave my pores looking and feeling extra clean, its real strength is its brightening abilities! This mask is ideal for those looking to fade away dark spots, scars and sun damage. I’ve never experienced any sort of irritation and can use this mask pretty frequently without worrying about my skin reacting.

3. Belif Super Knights Purifying Clay Mask

Key Functions: Pore purifying & sebum control

Key Ingredients: Purifying complex (milk thistle & sage), Napiers’ original formula (oat kernel, calendula, catnip, raspberry leaf, wild indigo root & chickweed), kaolin & bentonite clays

This next mask is clay based and perfect for those with clogged and/or oily skin. This mask is unique in that the formula remains creamy, never drying out or turning into a flaky mess. It has a relatively strong herbal scent thanks to the Napiers’ original formula and a very thick, smooth consistency that feels cool and refreshing upon application. Despite containing a double clay blend of kaolin and bentonite, I don’t find this mask dries my skin out at all. In fact, it leaves my skin feeling quite nourished and clean! It’s a little on the pricey side, but in my opinion, completely worth it!

4. Jumiso All Day Vitamin Nourishing & Recharging Mask

Key Functions: Brightening, hydrating & nourishing

Key Ingredients: Ascorbic acid, sea buckthorn extract, niacinamide, glutathione, retinol, vitamin E, lemon peel powder

This next mask is for the vitamin C lovers! Ascorbic acid, vitamin C-rich sea buckthorn extract, lemon peel powder and a blend of citrus extracts give this mask a healthy dose of vitamin C. Alongside other brightening ingredients like niacinamide, glutathione and retinol, this one is perfect for brightening and giving your complexion a more even looking appearance. It has a lovely gel refreshing gel texture that has lemon peel chunks suspended in it. While lemon peel powder is listed under the ingredients, I personally found the peel to be much larger fragments than just a powder, as you can see in the texture shot. This mask has a really nice orange/citrus fragrance to it, and leaves my skin feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and nourished without any irritation at all.

5. Beauty Of Joseon Red Bean Refreshing Pore Mask

Key Functions: Sebum control, pore care & physical exfoliation

Key Ingredients: 30% Haenam red bean extract, red bean powder, kaolin, pear, ivy, apple & strawberry extracts

Lastly, we have the Red Bean mask from Beauty Of Joseon! This one has a thick, clay texture that is studded with tiny fragments of ground up red bean powder for a bit of gentle exfoliation that leaves my skin feeling extra soft. There is no added fragrance to this mask, but the blend of natural ingredients gives off a scent that really reminds me of banana bread! I found this mask to be especially helpful for my oily skin, drastically reducing the sebum production without leaving my skin feeling tight or dry. This mask can be a little bit time consuming to rinse off once it’s fully dried, so I highly recommend using a silicone facial scrubber to speed up the process a bit!
