What Is Propolis?


Propolis, commonly referred to as "bee glue," is a sticky substance created by honeybees through a mixture of their saliva and beeswax with plant-derived materials such as tree buds and sap. This natural product is used in traditional medicine, food and dietary supplements, as well as in varnishing string instruments and skincare products.

 


What Are The Benefits Of Propolis In Skincare?


Propolis offers a wide range of skincare benefits! With its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, propolis can aid in wound healing, making it a great choice for those with rosacea or acne-prone skin. Additionally, propolis is rich in antioxidants, which can combat free radicals that harm skin cells, thereby shielding the skin from environmental stressors and premature aging. Improved skin hydration and a strengthened skin barrier can also expected, as propolis contains natural humectants and emollients that assist in attracting and retaining moisture in the skin. While propolis is generally well-tolerated, it may trigger allergic reactions in some individuals, so be sure to conduct a patch test before adding this ingredient into your routine!

1. COSRX Full Fit Propolis Synergy Toner

Key Fuctions: moisturizes, hydrates, soothes, anti-inflammatory + antibacterial properties

 

This toner from COSRX was my introduction to propolis skincare products! Its lightweight, watery serum texture absorbs beautifully, instantly hydrating my skin and providing a soothing effect. While I usually apply multiple layers of toner for extra hydration, I find that a single layer of this toner gives me a radiant finish without any stickiness. The COSRX Full Fit Propolis Synergy line offers an ampoule, cream, overnight mask, toner pads, and a sheet mask, all of which I haven't tried yet but have heard positive feedback about. I have, however, tried and adore their lip sleeping mask, which I will review towards the end of this blog.




2. CNP Laboratory Propolis Energy Active Ampule

Key Functions: deeply moisturizes, soothes, revitalizes, anti-aging

 

The ampoule has an amazing watery consistency that is beautifully silky and smooth on the skin. It provides deep nourishment and is quickly absorbed without leaving any residue or stickiness. Additionally, it offers a soothing effect, and the inclusion of beta-glucan contributes to its anti-aging benefits. I especially appreciate its intense moisturizing properties.




3. By Wishtrend Propolis Energy Calming Ampoule

Key Ingredients: 15% propolis extract, houttuynia cordata extract (heartleaf), witch hazel


Key Functions: anti-inflammatory, soothing, nourishing

 

The most calming product featured on the list is definitely this ampoule! Instead of water, it has a base of heartleaf extract, providing a significant soothing effect in addition to the propolis. Initially thick and similar to honey in texture, it transforms into a light, watery serum upon application, quickly absorbing into the skin without leaving any sticky residue. While I have also tested and liked By Wishtrend's essence and cream from the Propolis Energy Calming line, this ampoule is absolutely the star in this line!




4. CNP Laboratory Propolis Essential Eye Cream

Key Ingredients: 600ppm propolis extract, niacinamide, panthenol, squalane, honey extract, royal jelly extract, shea butter


Key Functions: nourishing, brightening, anti-aging

 

I am a huge fan of CNP Laboratory's Propolis line, as you may have gathered by now! Although this cream is labeled as an 'eye cream,' it can be used as a facial and neck moisturizer as well, which is exactly how I prefer to use it. Its luxurious silky gel-cream consistency is so nice on the skin and absorbs quickly without any residue. Despite its thick texture, it is surprisingly lightweight and leaves my skin deeply hydrated. My only complaint is with the tube's size. I adore this cream and would be so happy if it were available in a larger jar!




5. COSRX Lip Sleep Propolis Lip Sleeping Mask

Key Ingredients: propolis extract, royal jelly extract, beeswax, honey extract, honey, shea butter, saccharomyces ferment


Key Functions: moisturizes, nourishes, softens lips

 

The lip sleeping mask is versatile and can be applied as an overnight treatment with a thick layer before bedtime or during the day with a thin layer similar to a lip balm. Its rich, honey-like texture creates a protective barrier on your lips, ensuring they are left soft and moisturized when you wake up in the morning.




6. CNP Laboratory Propolis Lipcerin

Key Functions: nourishes, exfoliates, hydrates, soothes

 

The Propolis Lipcerin from CNP Laboratory quickly became a holy grail lip product for me after just a few uses! I apply it as a lip mask before bed and as a lip balm throughout the day. Surprisingly, it stays on my lips all night, a rare occurrence even with specialized lip masks! The texture, appearance, scent, and flavor of this lipcerin truly feels like you're applying honey to your lips. The inclusion of gluconolactone, a PHA, is very effective in exfoliating dry, dead skin. Alberta's dry and cold winters often leave my lips looking and feeling rough, making this lipcerin a true lifesaver last winter, and it will undoubtedly continue to be so in the upcoming colder months!
